The old "Derby Gaol" can be found under numbers 50 and 51 Friargate in Derby. It is said to be one of the most haunted spots in the country.

The jail ("gaol" is an old-fashioned variant of the word) was used between 1756 and 1828 and was originally (it's believed) two separate cell blocks - in fact, it's thought the facilities could continue under neighbouring properties, too).

It is now a museum and much of the jail has been restored to its former condition.

Whilst the jail was being worked on, clues were found as to what some of the cells may have been used for in the past. For example, marks on the inside of the door of the debtor's cell refer to money and amounts to be paid. There are gallows outside the entrance - a timely reminder of past events.

As well as guided tours, the owner, Richard Felix, also arranges "lock-ins" on some Friday and Saturday nights. Imagine sleeping where a condemned man may have spent his last night!

Derby Gaol is said to be haunted by the spirits of former inmates

1. Ghostly apparitions: Visitors have reported seeing the ghostly figures of men, women, and children, believed to be the spirits of former inmates.
2. Unexplained noises: Strange noises, such as footsteps, doors creaking, and whispers, have been reported by visitors and staff.
3. Mysterious cold spots: Some areas of the prison are said to be unusually cold, even in the summer months, leading some to believe that these cold spots are evidence of paranormal activity.
4. Ghostly children: There have been reports of children laughing and playing in the prison, even when there are no children present.
5. Poltergeist activity: Some visitors have reported experiencing poltergeist activity, including objects moving on their own and unexplained physical attacks.

Notable Paranormal Events:

1. The Hanging of the Pentrich Revolutionaries: In 1817, three men were hanged at Derby Gaol for their role in the Pentrich Revolution. Their spirits are said to haunt the prison, and many visitors have reported seeing their ghostly apparitions.
2. The Ghost of the Gaoler: The ghost of a former gaoler (prison governor) is said to haunt the prison. According to legend, the gaoler was murdered by an inmate, and his spirit has been seen wandering the corridors of the prison.
3. The Mysterious Cell Door: One of the prison cells is said to have a door that opens and closes on its own. Many visitors have reported seeing the door move, even when there is no one around.
